Alabama Mission, 2006

In April of 2006, twelve members of our community traveled to Alabama to assist victims of Hurricane Katrina.

Following the guidance of the Presbytery of South Alabama, we sent a mission team to work with Lutheran Disaster Response at Bayou La Batre, Alabama. Most of the team traveled by van and they stayed at Overlook Presbyterian Church in Mobile, Alabama. Each day they would travel 30 minutes to the Lutheran Disaster Recovery Center in Bayou La Batre to receive daily work assignments. Their projects included securing tarps on roofs, carrying away debris, replacing windows and dry rotted window frames, wiring new outlets, building a ramp for handicapped individuals, and installing dry wall. The members of the Alabama Mission Team were: Jan and Hennie de Graaf, Bill and Mary Lou Forsee, Steve Haubert, Rachel Novakovic, Cheryl Porrett, Jim and Nena Wagner, Bruce and Mary Wharram, and Pastor Tom Schwartz.
